PLATTEKILL — A scorching heat wave sent some students home early Monday and will do so again Tuesday. But however hot it got, you couldn't get any hotter than Sean Egan was Monday.
Egan is a first lieutenant with the Modena Fire Department; he and scores of his fellow firefighters spent Monday morning battling a fire at a roadside barbershop on Route 32.
Like every other firefighter on the sun-baked scene, Egan had turned out in 30 pounds of rubberized protective gear. After having a bottle of water poured over his crew-cut head, Egan briefly describe the situation:
"It sucks," he said.
The fire, which torched the shop and some back-room apartments, was quickly put under control. The sun was not so easily assuaged.
